Dominance and Steadiness: compatibility
Opposites on both axes: D is fast and results-driven, S is measured and protects relationships. The hardest pair and one of the most useful.
D and S differ in everything: pace, attitude to conflict, what counts as important. D sees slowness and indecision in S; S sees pressure and disrespect in D. And yet the pair complements each other perfectly: D breaks through and launches, S holds on, sees things through and keeps the team together. It only works with explicit rules: D eases off the pressure and gives warning of changes, S learns to say “no” and to voice disagreement out loud rather than through silence.
What they have in common
- Practicality: both want the job done
- Loyalty to commitments
- A dislike of empty talk and posturing
Where friction arises
- Pace: D rushes, S needs time
- Conflict: D takes it on easily, S avoids it at all costs
- S silently agrees and doesn't do it, D reads that as sabotage
Tips for the Dominance style (D)
- Give advance warning of changes and explain why they're needed
- Ask for their opinion directly and wait for the answer without filling the pause
- Thank them for their reliability: an S won't ask for recognition
Tips for the Steadiness style (S)
- Voice disagreement right away, briefly and to the point: a D respects that
- Ask for clear deadlines and priorities instead of guessing
- Don't take D's drive as hostility: it's just their normal speed
